Description:
Liming is often applied to counter soil acidity problems. Previous study suggests that the use of buffer solution method produces an accurate estimation of lime should be applied to soils to reach a specific pH target. This study was conducted to determine whether the buffer solution method is suitable for the determination of liming soils on tidal swampland soils. The amount of lime to reach pH 5.0 was determined using the equation: Y = 136.90 - 25.07X, where Y is the amount of lime (ton hectare-1), while X is the pH value of soils measured using buffer solution Ca(CH3COO)2 pH 5.5. Acuration and precision this buffer solution method to estimate the amount of lime applied was tested and validated through a 4-week laboratory incubation experiment. Results of this study showed that Ca(CH3COO)2 pH 5.5 to estimate the amount of lime applied to soils is accurate to be used for tidal swampland soils containing relatively high exchangeable-aluminium. This method is simple and concise and thus it is well suited for the use in the swampland soils.
