The hydrophysical properties of ombrotrophic peat soils from the Central Kalimantan in Indonesia were investigated. The number of 93 soil samples were collected from three layers representing acrotelm, intermediate, and catotelm layers in six land use types representing undeveloped and developed peatlands. Parameters of both moisture retention characteristics of the van Genuchten model and moisture release characteristics of the modified-van Genuchten model were derived from the hydrophysical properties of peat soils. In the developed peatland, water will be retained tightly by the peat soil due to increased water porosity and decreased drainage porosity. In the undeveloped peatland, in contrast, water will be drained fast, and the remaining will be retained weakly. Retained moisture volume of the peat soil from undeveloped peatland at the saturated condition was higher than that from developed peatland. Oppositely residual moisture volume was higher in developed peatland. This implies that less decomposed peat soils might lose moisture faster at the beginning period of drainage.
