Abstract: This study aimed at examining the density of filters applied along the route of mathematics and science teachers’ profession in Indonesia, starting from the entry requirements to teacher education programs, to the hiring process, and to the professional development for teachers. Through a literature review and interview with a contact in Indonesia, the data needed for this study were collected. Replicating the idea of “pipeline filters” in the previous study, Preparing Teachers around the World, which was written by Educational Testing Service researchers in 2003, there are eight pressure points that are identified as the components of the pipeline. These filters are identified as: high stakes, medium stakes, or low or no stakes which were determined on the basis of the classification rubrics developed in the previous study. Furthermore, the findings of this study were compared to those of the previous study which involved eight surveyed countries whose students always showed high proficiency in TIMSS. The comparison shows the result that the “pipeline filters” currently applied in Indonesia are not largely deviated from those of other countries surveyed in the previous study. However, there are some important notes that should be considered in viewing these findings. Key Words: Teacher Education, Teacher Certification, Teaching Profession, Professional Development.
