Abstract:
The use of synthetic polymers for the packaging materials can transfer additives that are harmful to the body. In addition, synthetic polymers also cause environmental pollution because it is difficult to biodegrade in the soil. Edible film can be an alternative packaging material that is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, inexpensive and it can be degraded in a short time. The objective of this research was to obtain the influence of glycerol addition to characteristics of edible film from corn starch by the addition of chitosan as the packaging material. The characteristic of chitosan was known through FTIR test. The mechanical properties of edible films were known through tensile strength test and termination lengthening test. Addition of glycerol to edible film caused a decrease in the value of tensile strength and elongation of termination. The highest tensile strength and elongation termination value was at the concentration of glycerol 4 ml.
