A 42-day trial has been conducted to study survival rate (SR), growth (relative and specific growth rate, SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of five different fish species when cultured in peat swamp water. Asian catfish (Clarias gariepinus), Pangasius (Pangasius hypophthalmus), Giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy), Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) and Kissing gourami (Helostoma temminckii) were cultured in wooden cages placed in canal feds with black acidic water (pH ranging from 3 – 4). After one week cultured, Clarias gariepinus maintained the SR at 93.5 % until the end of the trial period. The SR of Pangasius hypophthalmus started to decline after day 5 of culture and steadily declined until day 25 before it was maintained at 66.3 % to the end of the trial. The SR of Osphronemus goramy showed sharp decline after day 19 before it reached 0% at day 29. At the end of the culture, the highest SR was gained by Helostoma temminckii (99.9 %) followed by the SR of Clarias gariepinus (93.5 %), Pangasius hypophthalmus (66.7 %) and Anabas testudineus (57 %). Significantly higher relative growth (P < 0.05) have been indicated by both Pangasius hypophthalmus and Clarias gariepinus while Anabas testudineus testudineus and Helostoma temminckii maintained significantly lower (P < 0.05) relative growth. At the end of the trial, the relative growth of Pangasius hypophthalmus (1288.58 ± 55.63 %) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than relative growth of Clarias gariepinus (1092.16 ± 45.89 %). Pangasius hypophthalmus and Clarias gariepinus shared highest specific growth rate (SGR) ranging from 5.86 – 6.99 and 6.18 – 7.78 %/day respectively and showed no significant difference (P < 0.05) between them toward the end of the trial. In contrary, Anabas testudineus and Helostoma temminckii showed significantly lower SGR (P < 0.05) compare to SGR of Pangasius hypophthalmus (1.50 ± 0.07 %/day) and Clarias gariepinus (1.77 ± %/day) for the entire rearing time. The FCR’s of Pangasius hypophthalmus and Clarias gariepinus were significantly lower (P < 0.05) compare to FCR’s of Anabas testudineus and Helostoma temminckii. After 28 days of rearing the FCR’s of Pangasius hypophthalmus and Anabas testudineus decreased significantly (P < 0.05) from 1.07 to 0.80 and 2.43 to 1.05 before decreased further to only 0.75 and 0.92 respectively at the end of the culture period. Helostoma temminckii maintained steady FCR (P > 0.05) from beginning to the end of the trial time ranging from 1.34 to 1.67. The results of study suggest that Clarias gariepinus and Pangasius hypophthalmus were suitable fish species cultured in wooden cages in low pH of peat swamp water. Although during cultured Helostoma teminckii and Anabas testudineus possessed high survival rate, it did not transform into faster growth rate.
