dc.description Several experiments have been carried out to elucidate the microbe(s) capable in reducing methane (CH4) emissions while improving acid sulphate soil (ASS) productivity for paddy. ASS used as paddy, rubber, oil palm, rambutan fields and forest were tested for CH4 oxidation activity. Methanotropic population in soils having CH4 oxidation activity was characterized. Methanotrophic bacteria was propagated and then applied along with biochar to ASS cultivated to paddy at the rate of 8 ton ha-1 . The plant height, tiller number and biomass of paddy as well as CH4 emissions were observed. The results showed that CH4 oxidation activity was the highest from ASS cultivated to paddy (i.e., 6.13 x 10-11 g CH4/week), followed by soils taken rubber and oil palm fields. The characters of methanotrophs found in paddy feld were cream in color, coly form and big colony size. Methanotrophic bacteria isolated from ASS increased paddy plant growth but had no effect on CH4. Keywords: Acid sulfate soil, methanotrophic bacteria, paddy, biochar
