Sungai Katingan yang terletak di Kalimantan Tengah (sekarang) adalah merupakan salah satu sungai yang jauh dari perhatian para pedagang. Setelah berakhirnya Perang Banjar (1865), dan masih berlanjutnya Perang Barito sampai 1905, dimana orang Dayak Bakumpai banyak yang terlibat dalam peperangan tersebut. Orang Dayak Bakumpai adalah pedagang yang ulet seperti yang ditulis oleh Neuwenhuis (1900-an) dan Schwaner (1840-an). Mereka kemudian banyak yang mengalihkan kegiatan perdagangannya ke sungai Katingan untuk berdagang, yaitu mencari dan membeli hasil hutang seperti getah hangkang, katiau, jelutung, dan damar serta rotan. Sungai Katingan daerah rawan yang terkenal dengan asang kayau dan serangan magisnya. Pedagang dari Banjar, dari Negara dan Kelua tidak berani memasuki sungai Katingan. Orang Dayak Bakumpai menggunakan jukung gundul mengajak pedagang lainnya berkonvoi memasuki sungai Katingan. Perdagangan dimulai dengan pasar bisu, perdagangan barter, sampai perdagangan mengenal uang. Orang Dayak Bakumpaui banyak yang sukses dalam kegiatan perdagangan ini, baik yang berpusat di Mendawai maupun di Tumbang Samba. Orang Dayak Bakumpai kemudian membangun tempat tinggal di Tumbang Samba yang sekarang dikenal sebagai Samba Bakumpai. Sekarang dengan masuknya pedagang besar, atau pengusaha-pengusaha besar seperti pengusahaan hutan, perkebunan dan pertambangan mengakibatkan pedagang Bakumpai agak tersisih. Pedagang Bakumpai yang biasa dengan hitungan dua kali untung, yaitu untung di barang dan untung di hasil hutan, nampaknya kalah bersaing dengan strategi dagang yang datang berikutnya yang mempunyai perputaran lebih cepat dan lebih banyak menggunakannuang tunai. Pedagang Bakumpai harusnya mengatur strategi baru untuk mengembalikan zaman keemasan pedagang Bakumpai zaman dahulu.
