Many teachers encounter problems in teaching writing skills such as students’ poor command of English vocabulary and inability to write in English, insufficient time allotted to aid each student, and lack of teachers’ expertise regarding teaching strategies. Therefore, training for English teachers on approaches for teaching writing skills are needed. The objective of this activity is to train English teachers to develop a model for teaching writing descriptive text by using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). It employed a participatory technique based on Kurt Lewin’s theory, which stresses the target participants’ active participation throughout the training process. A total of 15 teachers from various agencies in Kabupaten Banjar participated in this community service project. The training consisted of explanation on PWIM model, question and answer, group work on developing the model, reflection, and evaluation. Based on the reflection, the participants concluded
that utilizing PWIM would be better than using visual media to assist students in developing writing skills. In a nutshell, English teachers in Kabupaten Banjar have a good conceptual understanding of how to teach descriptive text writing skills. From the lesson plan and evaluation sheet evaluated, the participants were able to create a teaching-learning plan for teaching descriptive text skills using PWIM. |
