Eleocharis dulcisplant is one of the sustainable wet-land materials available in enormous quantities throughout Kalimantan, Indonesia. This work evaluates the use of E. dulcisas a source of cellulose to obtain nanocrystalline cellulose by acid hydrolysis. The isolation process started with the removal of extractives by soxhlet extraction, followed by delignification using sodium chlorite in the acid condition. The holocellulose samples were then soaked in sodium hydroxide to remove hemicellulose and produce cellulose. Thehydrolysis was a performance at 45°C for 60 and 120 minusing 100 mLof sulphuric acid50% (v/v) for each gram of cellulose. The nanocrystalline cellulosewascharacterized using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), Fourier transformsinfrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffractions (XRD).Theparticle size analysis showedthat the diameter of the obtained nanocrystalline cellulosewas affected by hydrolysis time. FTIR spectrashowed some differences in the peaks, and some were shifted due to the acid hydrolysistime. The XRD results showed that the crystallinity index of the nanocrystalline cellulose was71.99% and 71.61% for the acid hydrolysis time 60 and 120 min, respectively. Nanocrystalline celluloseobtained from E. dulciscellulose has an excellentproperties and can be used for food packaging and biomedicalapplications. Keywords: Eleoharis dulcis;nanocrystalline cellulose;wetland-plant; acid hydrolysis |
