A raised bed-based agricultural system in tidal swamp lands has been commonly applied by farmers.Raised beds were made in order to meet favorable root zones for growing crops, however this might also promote translocation and transformation of ions and subsequently affect nutritional and acidity status in soil systems. There was necessary to evaluate ion dynamics in raised beds differing in their ages. The present study was carried out in tidal swamp land of Barito Kuala, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Compositions of ions were measured in samples of rain water, river water, drainage water and soil solution during periods of July-September 2007. The study showed that ion dynamics on the raised bed was different with ages. Tidal fluctuations and rainfalls might either leach or supply ions on the raised bed. Concentrations of base cations on outer sides were higher than on inner sides of the younger raised bed, especially on acrotelm layers, otherwise on the older raised bed. Results imply that there is necessary to recharge the raised bed by embarking muds periodically from sunken beds to control over-leaching of base cations.
